Offside Rules

Master the most debated rule in football with 3D interactive animations.

FIFA Law 11: The Offside Rule

The offside rule prevents attackers from simply waiting near the opponent's goal ("goal-hanging"). While it sounds complicated, it boils down to three simple conditions judged at the **exact moment** the ball is passed by a teammate.

1The player must be in the **opponent's half** of the pitch.
2The player must be **closer to the goal line** than the second-last opponent (usually the last defender).
3The player must be **closer to the goal line** than the ball. (If they are behind the ball, they are onside!)

When is it Penalized?

Being in an offside position is **not** an infraction by itself. It is only blown dead if the player becomes actively involved in the play by:

  • **Interfering with play**: Receiving or touching the ball passed by a teammate.
  • **Interfering with an opponent**: Blocking the goalkeeper's line of sight or challenging defenders.
  • **Gaining an advantage**: Playing the ball after it rebounds off the post, crossbar, or a defender.

Scenario 1: Offside Pass (Forward Pass)

OFFSIDE 🔴

Neymar passes the ball forward to Vini Jr. At the exact moment Neymar kicks the ball, Vini Jr. is already past the last Argentina defender (Romero) and ahead of the ball. This is a clear offside violation.

Key Rule: A player is offside if they are ahead of both the ball and the second-last opponent (the last defender) at the moment the ball is passed.
